Sweepstakes
Judge: Mrs. Linda Madden
Ms. Madden's critique appears in blue below

"First of all, thank you for inviting me to judge puppy sweeps; I was delighted to be asked, and it was truly a rewarding experience for me.

"General remarks: Overall the quality of the entry was very good. The first thing that impressed me was temperament; considering the adverse weather conditions, with tents and x-pens blowing over around the rings, the pups handled themselves very well.

"Coats, heads, pigment, size, and bone were good, some ears could be a wee bit better. Fronts were as expected; some a bit better than others, but in general front movement was good. Some of the younger pups were a bit loose in front and that affected how I placed them in their classes on the day, but I expect those fronts to tighten up a bit with exercise and maturity.

"Some of the adolescents had lost some bend of stifle, but that was to be expected in some of the classes. I liked the length of leg on most of the entries. I would like to have seen stronger rears on some of the pups - a few were quite hocky - but again with maturity and exercise that might improve. I like to see a good down and back, not too wide in front, not too close in the rear, and on some of the pups that was difficult to judge - in some cases the handlers were doing a great job, but the inexperienced pups had their own agenda!

"Again, thank you for inviting me to go over your pups, I had a wonderful time, and I thank the Irish Wolfhound community for their warmth and hospitality."

Puppy Dogs: 6-9 Months
1st 5 - Kaleel Glenamadda Starkeeper
"Excellent bone and lovely depth of chest. Coat texture was excellent, and when he moved he really used himself well. He was a powerful looking puppy both standing and moving. I would have liked a touch more rise over the loin."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 6-9 Winner
2nd 11 - Pitlochry's Ipsilon
"Another super young male, had a lovely outline, and a beautiful head and expression. He was outmoved by #1 this morning, but it was a very close call."

3rd 7 - Wolfkin Loki at Massapeag
4th 15 - St. Leger's Rhea's Wish

"#3 and #4 were also very nice representatives of the breed, but weren't quite as balanced at this point as the first two."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 6-9 Placements

Puppy Dogs: 9-12 Months
1st 17 - Irish Paddy of Nutstown
"A nice sized young male, nice topline, but his front is set a little further forward than I would have liked. He was being a bit of a handful today."

Sweeps Puppy Dog 9-12 Winner

Puppy Dogs: 12-15 Months
"Tough class!"
1st 27 - Clossongrey Whyzzard de Burgh

"An athletic young dog with a nice length of body, a lovely outline, well balanced, and he didn't disappoint when he moved. This pup has a lovely front assembly; his neck/shoulder/topline flowed together very smoothly allowing him to move freely without wasted motion. This pup went on to Best in Puppy Sweeps."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 9-12 Winner
2nd 43 - Pitlochry's Quintus
"Also a very nice male - he was eye catching, very sound and well balanced which needed to be rewarded, but his head is not his fortune."

3rd 39 - Starkeeper Kellamore Connor
"Moved well and was a nice example of the breed, but I felt his croup was a bit steep."

4th 23 - Gladstone's Mythical Journey
"Nice length of body, good outline, but was not moving as freely as those above."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 9-12 Placements

Puppy Dogs: 15-18 Months
1st 29 - Kellcastle Gryffindor Seeker
"An impressive young male, good bone, nice moving, could use a touch more length of neck. Moved out with confidence and power. He was in contention for Best in Puppy Sweeps, but he didn't move as freely from the shoulder as the 12-15 month pup."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 15-18 Winner
2nd 37 - Carickaneena McGarry
"A nice dog, pleasing outline, good angles, didn't move out quite as much as #1."

3rd 25 - Carickaneena Setanta O'BK
4th 41 - Greymist Gryphonn

"#3 and #4 both good sized dogs but not as shapely, or with as strong rears as I would have liked."
Sweeps Puppy Dog 15-18 Placements

Puppy Bitches: 6-9 Months
"Both bitches in this class were very nice. I had to nit pick in this class as both moved well, had nice outlines, and were very feminine pups."
1st 8 - Lovesong von der Oelmuhle
"A slightly smoother neck/shoulder flowing into the topline, and was more self assured than #2 this morning."
Sweeps Puppy Bitch 6-9 Winner
2nd 6 - SQL at Summerhill Sweeps Puppy Bitch 6-9 Placements

Puppy Bitches: 9-12 Months
"A strong class of quality bitches."
1st 16 - Erinwood's Solo Right Out Loud
"A lovely example of breed type. Good size, nice bone, good front assembly, a strong looking bitch but very feminine. Very nice side gait, very powerful looking on the move, (she gave her handler a good work out!) and this is what gained her the #1 spot over the #2 bitch today. This bitch went on to BOS in Sweeps."
Sweeps Puppy Bitch 9-12 Winner
2nd 20 - Erinwood Solo High Fidelity
"Very similar attributes to #1, and it was tough to choose between these two bitches. I couldn't fault either on their down and back as both were very true, but the #1 outmoved this bitch by a fraction. I later discovered that #2 and #1 were litter sisters!"

3rd 24 - Saringas Miss Hexam
"Lovely bend of stifle and nice side gait."

4th 12 - Laislann Starkeeper Rayne
"A more substantial bitch, but not as shapely as I'd like.

"#3 and #4 were both very nice bitches, but their outlines were not quite as good as the first two."
Sweeps Puppy Bitch 9-12 Placements

Puppy Bitches: 12-15 Months
1st 44 - Birnam Wood Lorrha Missal
"A very nice bitch. Moved well, good depth of chest."
Sweeps Puppy Bitch 12-15 Winner
2nd 34 - Starkeeper Cearah of Fitzwick
"A substantial bitch with good bend of stifle. Would like to have seen a stronger rear."

3rd 42 - Erinwood Dolce & Gabbana
"A well balanced looking bitch, but didn't seem to use herself today."
Sweeps Puppy Bitch 12-15 Placements

Puppy Bitches: 15-18 Months

"Another bitch of good size and bone. Nice front assembly, but needed a bit more rear."

3rd 46 - Claridon Ainamae of Eagle
"Nice bitch but not moving as freely as #1 and #2. However, her head is not the most feminine."

4th 48 - Greymist Gaelen

Conformation
Judge: Mr. Michael Canalizo
Mr. Canalizo's critique appears in green below

"There are Special Shows and there are Shows that are Special. The 'Easter Event' of the Potomac Irish Wolfhound Club has the distinction of being both! In order to earn this hallmark every detail has to flow from the very beginning to the very end without a ripple along the way. The club provided me with good clear correspondence, without being copious. They took advantage of having Annapolis in close proximity in which to house their judges in a wonderful Bed & Breakfast. They found the perfect escort in 'Christy,' who was in charge of getting me everywhere I needed to be, which she did with ease. I thoroughly enjoyed our chats while bouncing back and forth. My stewards were very accommodating to my quirky requests in trying to avoid getting wet on the first day or sunburned on the second. But then the club has the good fortune to have Peter van Brunt as Chief Steward, a man who knows something about how to run a ring! The luncheon on Sunday was delicious! Dee Van Nest and Jeanette Luther are a good team as Show Chairs and they should be very proud of their committee's ability in staging such a good event.

"Before I get into the actual critiquing I would like to share my overall impression of the entry. The Irish Wolfhound is such a unique breed. Hounds seen at the Specialty level confirm that the keepers of the breed seem successful in maintaining the classic shape, coupled with the desired function of the breed over the years. When my winners classes were assembled I was taken aback by the beautiful lines of the contenders, especially in the bitch competition. I was pleased that the exhibitors showed their entries without racing them or over stacking them. I used to hear complaints from some of my friends/breeders who questioned my asking the exhibit to 'Free Stack' at a certain point of the evaluation process. They didn't think a breed of their size made the right impression under those circumstances. For those in attendance it was most evident that those built correctly held the correct shape of the breed. A well made dog with the desired length, great size and powerful musculature made a commanding impression. Those who blended those virtues with sound action were easy to reward.

"I love the obvious affection the dogs shared with their owners. Temperaments were excellent for the size of the entry. Most were presented in good condition with only a few over trimmed or not 'clean'...and I'm not referring to some mud on the day!...Mud has no odor!

"I was excited when asked to pass judgement at this Specialty. For many years it has been an event where good breeders came together. This year was no exception. I left the weekend knowing the Irish Wolfhound is in good hands.

"Please keep in mind that the accompanying pictures might not always match what one see's during the actual evaluation. My placements reflect my impression of the exhibit at a certain moment in time. Small details that could be 'fleeting' will/might influence my decision at any given moment. I look to reward traits that one needs to preserve in the breed. These details keep the 'Irish in the Wolfhound.'

"I dictated my critique in Reverse Placement Order as each dog was placed for their positive qualities and decisions made when the all the good virtues carried the entrant to a higher placement."

"This dog commanded the ring with his well timed movement. His type was beautiful. Small ears, keen eyes, a neck that had strength and arch. Front matched the rear in angles. Clean every way he moved. Won the class on the powerful rear...left an impression that he would/could work all day."
Conformation Dogs 12-18 Winner
2nd 29 - Kellcastle Gryffindor Seeker, HP083780/07. 12/6/03, breeder Anne Spalding Prill, by Ch. Kellcastle Chocolate Ribbon x Ch. Kellcastle's Hoitie Toitie, owners: Barbara K. Kunkel & Anne Spalding

"Nice well set under dog with a good reach of neck. Excellent coat texture present. His beautiful fluid gait earned him a placement but his lack of confidence on the day held him back from a higher standing in the class."
Conformation Dogs 12-18 Placements

Dogs: Novice
1st 51- Kellykerry Rapho of Eagle, HP046982/06. 4/23/03, breeders Glenn H. Myer and Samuel Evans Ewing III, by Ch. Cairbre Music of Eagle x Kellykerry Betsy of Eagle, owner: Glenn H. Myer
"This was a good class for Novice. This dog won for his very good stature blended with fine details. His movement was surprisingly good due to a soft feel having come off a hard winter no doubt. When in firmer tone this dog will not go unnoticed!"

Conformation Dogs Novice Winner
2nd 45 - Karontara Starkeeper Fantom, HP066084/08. 7/27/03, breeders K. Volk, P. Hendrickson & J. Gagne, by Ch. Prairie Creek Harvard, JC x Can Ch. Starkeeper Cuhaven Binseen, owner: Jocelyne Gagne

Conformation Dogs Novice Placements

Dogs: Bred-By-Exhibitor
1st 55- Ard Rhi's All the Best of Eagle, HP072916/04. 8/24/03, breeders Art & Linda King and Samuel Evans Ewing III, by Ch. Whycket of Eagle x Aiobhell Carlo of Eagle, owners: Art & Linda King and Angela Payne
"Smoothness won the class for this dog. There wasn't a lump or bump standing or moving on this dog. He had all the details to create a noble yet keen expression. He had depth and angles to support his frame. Power to the rear from short hocks and good turn of stifle. The photo does not do justice to this dog. Seeing him in the ring might make you wonder if he was too 'different' from the others but I found those differences to be a very positive thing. In the winners class his movement around the huge ring impressed me enough to award him Winners Dog."

Conformation Dogs Novice Winner
2nd 57 - Erinwood Can You Hear Now, HP063927/01. 6/21/03, breeders Pamela & James Paloma, by Ch. Aarannwood Viking x Ch. Erinwood Chemaine of Eagle, owners: breeders
"This dog looked like my winner from the start of the class. I loved his size, shape, coat, and overall details...he just missed out to the 1st Place because it seemed his brain wasn't sending the same message to the legs at the same time."

3rd 61 - Dochas Liam O'Cu, HP068877/01. 4/28/03, breeder Patricia Cracchiola, by Ch. Carrickaneena Troigh Dubh x Ch. Nutstown Kelly Two, owner: breeder
"A nice dog with good rear action. He had good depth but lacked some spring of rib, if he's a youngster he should fill in with maturity."

4th 53 - Armagh's Maverick of Noble, HM988323/09. 10/29/01, breeders Joe, Kathy & Jean Roland, by Ch. Pitlochry's Real Eagle x Ch. R Noble Anam Cara, owners: Ben Carter and Joe Roland
"This was a good even class where minor features determined the placements. This was a good tall upstanding dog of correct type. Had he used his front a bit better he would have placed higher."
Conformation Dogs Novice Placements

"Every element of IW present. Perhaps not as much size as the 2nd, he won for the subtle features that define the breed. Ears, eyes and level planes completed a near perfect head. Coat and condition excellent. He was a close contender for Winners and was my Reserve Winners dog."

Conformation Dogs American Bred Winner
2nd 83 - Kellykerry Riley of Eagle, HP046982/05. 4/23/03, breeder Glenn Myer, by Ch. Cairbre Muse of Eagle x Kellykerry Betsy of Eagle, owners: Bob & Judy McConnell

"The good neck made this a noble looking dog. His well set front didn't match the rear where the bend of stifle wasn't as strong."

4th 69 - Rosslare's Naomhan O'Beltane, HP026850/01. 10/12/02, breeder Glynis Littlewood, by Ch. Xanax von der Oehmuhle x Ch. Rosslares Savannnah, owners: Diane Camel, Ken Neff and Glynis Littlewood

"He won on his abundance of correct bone and depth mixed with some fine elements of type. I was expecting a more enthusiastic way of going on a cold day like today. He was rewarded for all the correctness he possessed, but he didn't ask for more and I obliged!"

"The intense details of this bitch won the class. Her keen eye, strong underjaw and great reach of neck carried her in spite of what I would have changed in her foot action going away. The profile gait was smooth and flexible. Again...two very promising young ladies!"

Conformation Bitches 6-9 Winner

"A close decision between the 1st. & 2nd. In short, this bitch's head earned this placement.
Overall elements of type were excellent but I can't envision the breed working with any thing but correct demeanor coupled with sound movement. She had the movement but fell short on the former today."

3rd 36 - Carrickaneena Miss Eire, HP094246/03. 11/8/03, breeders Eileen M. & Eileen B. Flanagan, by Ch. Carrickaneena Dearg Mac Logan x Ch. Carrickaneena Tir Na Nog, owners: John & Maureen English and Eileen M. & Eileen B. Flanagan

"A nice rangy bitch with a smoothness about her. Sound and well made but her tail over reacted to this cool day."
Conformation Bitches 12-18 Placements

Bitches: Novice
"A strange class to find such depth of quality (at least to me). Proportionately the highest level of quality. The differences from 1st to 4th were minimal."
1st 58 - Kellykerry Megan of Eagle, HP046982/07. 4/23/03, breeders Glenn H. Myer and Samuel Evans Ewing III, by Ch. Cairbre Music of Eagle x Kellykerry Betsy of Eagle, owner: Glenn H. Myer
"A beautiful bitch in almost every way. Her coat, a near perfect ear, depth and girth without being coarse...movement from every side textbook. If I could change one thing about her it would be the head planes. She won in spite of them, not because of them. Her impression of power and pleasing symmetry carried her to Reserve Winners Bitch."

Conformation Bitches Novice Winner
2nd 56 - Redtops Brenniam Tudor Rose, HP035087/03. 12/20/02, breeder Rosemary E. Wortman, by Am. Ch. Redtops Phantom of the Opera x Redtops Brennagh, owners: William J. & Brenda M. Neu
"Shapely and easy action on this nice bitch. Her footfall was excellent but her tail carriage kept her from winning the class."

3rd 52 - Brandywhine Mida of Eagle, HM967658/02. 5/1/01, breeders Anne C. Tweer and Samuel Evans Ewing, III, by Kerryarc Ronan of Eagle x Ch. Brandywhine Moncha of Eagle, owners: Joe & Kathy Roland and Sam Houston McDonald
"A stately bitch with correct head properties. More length and angulation would benefit this pretty bitch. It was her impressive movement that earned her this placement."

4th 62 - Limerick Lea of Eagle, HP065643/04. 8/25/03, breeders Linda & Jamie Souza, by Ch. Oxmoon Brogan of Limerick x Ch. Lile Bhreac of Eagle, owners: Samuel Evans Ewing, III & Sam Houston McDonald
"A late arrival that never got settled in. Everything about this bitch screamed IW. But she only gave fleeting moments to be judged."

"Always a picture in the class. My hands glided over this bitch from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail. Her neck was long and strong, her chest deep and full, her length was supported by a powerful loin and if the handler was in as good as condition as she was, I would have kept her running just to enjoy the ease of gait she displayed. She earned Winners Bitch in a field of very good contenders."

Best of Breed Class:
"A wonderful sight to see a Specials Class of this quality. There were many dogs and bitches that would be welcome representatives in any competition anywhere. As I brought the contenders down to a smaller number it became obvious to me that there was one male and three bitches that the decision would come down to."

Best of Breed: 131 - Ch. Taliesyn's Llenlleawg, CGC, HM902949/03. 5/27/00, breeders Donna & David Smith and Samuel Ewing III, by Donna's Dream von der Oehmuhle x Ch. Taliesin's Lasair of Eagle, owners: Karen F. Malone and Donna R. Smith
"From the start Ch. Taliesyn's Llenlleawg filled my eye because of his great size and shape which he held standing and moving the entire time. He showed power and swiftness. He was muscular, he had level planes in the head with a keen expression, he had so many of the breed's desired details. If he had any flaws they were so minor that I never made notice of them...that's the mark of a great dog! He was hard pressed by some of the bitches."
